Over het museum
Hardwick Hall was built between 1590 and 1597 for Bess of Hardwick, one of the wealthiest women in England. Her architect was Robert Smythson, and the house is famous for its very large windows, which gave rise to the saying “more glass than wall”. It was designed to display her wealth, power and ambition, and it has one of the largest long galleries in any English house.
Bess’s descendants, the Cavendish family and later the Dukes of Devonshire, kept Hardwick, but they preferred to spend their time and money on nearby Chatsworth. As a result Hardwick was altered very little, and it still contains the tapestries, embroideries and 16th- and 17th-century furniture collected over four centuries. In the 20th century the house passed to the Treasury in lieu of death duties in 1956 and was transferred to the National Trust in 1959.
Today the house is the centre of a 2,500-acre estate with formal gardens, parkland and woodland trails. Next to the hall stands Hardwick Old Hall, which is run by English Heritage; the National Trust and English Heritage have a partnership on the property.
