Over het museum
Haworth Art Gallery occupies Hollins Hill House, a Grade II listed Arts and Crafts country house built between 1907 and 1909 for the cotton manufacturer William Haworth and his sister Anne. The architect was Walter Brierley, sometimes called the "Northern Lutyens", who worked with the plasterer George Bankart and drew on the gardening ideas of Gertrude Jekyll. The house is built of local sandstone and has a hand-crafted oak staircase with a stained-glass window that refers to the cotton trade, as well as extensive oak panelling and ornate plaster ceilings.
Anne Haworth bequeathed the house and about nine acres of gardens to the people of Accrington in 1920, and it opened as the town art gallery in 1921. The estate includes a stables block, a motor house with a rare above-ground petrol store and a potting shed. Most of the collection came as gifts and bequests from local people, including Victorian oil paintings, watercolours and ceramics, and later additions include works by Accrington-born artists such as Gerard de Rose, Leslie Duxbury and John Virtue.
The gallery is best known for its Tiffany art glass. Joseph Briggs, who was born in Accrington, trained as an engraver, emigrated to New York and rose to become managing director of Tiffany Studios. In 1932 and 1933 he sent three crates of Tiffany glass and decorative objects to his home town. The collection of vases, mosaic samplers, designs and glass tiles was later joined by pieces from other local museums and by further acquisitions. Today the house also contains a tea room, a gift shop, a family room and artists' studios in the former stables.
