Over het museum

Hever Castle began in the 13th century as a walled bailey with a gatehouse, which is the oldest surviving part of the site. In 1462 the Boleyn family turned the fortified house into a more comfortable manor. Thomas Boleyn inherited it in 1505, and his daughter Anne, later the second wife of Henry VIII, spent part of her childhood here. After Thomas Boleyn died in 1539 the castle passed to the Crown, and Henry VIII gave it to Anne of Cleves in 1540 as part of their divorce settlement.

Over the following centuries the castle changed hands several times and gradually fell into disrepair, and for a long period it was let to tenants. In 1903 the American businessman William Waldorf Astor bought it and carried out a thorough restoration of the castle. He also built the Tudor-style Astor Wing, a group of guest buildings behind the castle, dug the lake and created the Italian Garden to show his collection of classical statues and ornaments.

The Astor family sold the estate in 1983 to the Guthrie family, who run it today through Hever Castle Ltd. Inside, visitors see panelled rooms, paintings, furniture and objects from the Tudor period, including items linked to Anne Boleyn, as well as displays about the Astor family. The grounds include formal gardens, yew and water mazes, a lake walk, play areas and a small military museum.
