Over het museum

Hovingham Hall has been the home of the Worsley family since they bought the Manor of Hovingham in 1563. The present Palladian house was designed and built by Thomas Worsley between 1750 and 1770. He was fascinated by both horses and architecture, and the house combines the two: visitors enter through a large Riding School reached through an arch from the village street. Worsley was a friend of George III and became Surveyor General to the Board of Works after the king's accession in 1760.

The principal rooms, including the Drawing Room, Dining Room and Ballroom, each have a different architectural style and hold a collection of pictures and furniture. The Riding School has good acoustics and has long been used for music; the Ryedale Festival has held concerts and operas there for around thirty years. Cricket has been played on the lawn in front of the house since at least 1858, and it is described as the oldest continuously used private cricket ground in England.

The gardens lie to the north and west of the house, with tall yew hedges, lawns, flower beds, a seventeenth-century dovecote and a glasshouse. Hovingham Hall is still a private home, lived in by Sir William Worsley and his family, and it is opened to visitors only for pre-booked groups.
