Over het museum
The Institute of Contemporary Arts was founded in the mid-1940s by a group of artists and poets as an alternative to the mainstream art establishment. In 1950 it moved to 17 Dover Street in Piccadilly, where it staged early exhibitions of modern art by Picasso, Jackson Pollock and Georges Braque. The Independent Group, which helped launch Pop art, met at the ICA through the 1950s and early 1960s and organised exhibitions there, including This Is Tomorrow.
With the support of the Arts Council the ICA moved in 1968 to its present home in Nash House, part of Carlton House Terrace on The Mall, next to the Duke of York Steps. The building holds galleries, a theatre, two cinemas, a bookshop and a bar. From the 1980s the institute worked through separate departments for visual art, cinema, performance and talks.
Today the ICA is a registered charity that commissions and presents new work in the visual arts, film, music and performance. It has no permanent collection; the visitor programme consists of changing exhibitions, film screenings, live events and talks.
