Over het museum
The Jack the Ripper Museum opened in August 2015 in a Victorian house on Cable Street in London's East End, a short walk from the streets where the unsolved murders of 1888 took place. The building was originally the subject of a planning application for a museum of women's history. When its new theme became visible on the facade a year later, it caused protests from local residents.
The museum is run by East London Tours Limited and tells the story over several floors. Visitors climb the staircase, where the names, ages and murder sites of the victims are shown alongside newspaper reports and illustrations. Recreated rooms include the Ten Bells pub, a sitting room, a woman's bedroom, a police station and Mitre Square. The displays cover the lives of the victims, the main suspects, the police investigation and everyday life in the East End of 1888.
The visit is self-guided, and the museum recommends its audio guide, which can be added when buying a ticket. A guided walking tour of Whitechapel, billed as the official tour, leaves from the museum twice a day.
