Over het museum
Jarrow Hall stands beside St Paul's Church and the remains of the monastery at Jarrow, where the monk and scholar Bede lived in the 7th and 8th centuries. Bede, an English monk at the twin monastery of Wearmouth-Jarrow, wrote The Ecclesiastical History of the English People and is widely regarded as the father of English history. The museum tells the story of Bede and his time, from the start of the Anglo-Saxon period to his life, death and legacy.
The oldest building on the site, Jarrow Hall House, is a Grade II listed manor built around 1785 by the local businessman Simon Temple. After changing hands several times it was restored and opened in 1974 as the Bede Monastery Museum. A new Bede Museum opened in 1993, and the house then became a visitor cafe with a display on Jarrow's mining and shipbuilding past. It was fully renovated in 2017.
In the 1990s the site also began to build a demonstration Anglo-Saxon farm called Gyrwe, an Old English name for the marsh-dwellers from whom Jarrow takes its name. Reconstructed buildings based on excavations in Northumbria, including a large mead hall modelled on Thirlings, a sunken-floored Grubenhaus and a monk's cell, stand among rare-breed animals kept for education. The museum holds Europe's largest collection of coloured glass from the 7th and 8th centuries, a full-sized reproduction of the Codex Amiatinus and the Abbadia Reliquary, and it is run by Groundwork South and North Tyneside with South Tyneside Council.
