Over het museum
The museum and art gallery opened in 1925 as part of Kirkcaldy's war memorial, on land given by John Nairn of the local linoleum-making family. A library extension followed in 1928, and the building stood beside the War Memorial Gardens for decades as the town's main cultural venue.
Fife Council carried out a refurbishment costing about 2.5 million pounds, and the building reopened in June 2013 as Kirkcaldy Galleries. The museum, art gallery, central library, children's library, local and family history room, cafe and gift shop now sit under one roof.
The collection includes the largest holding of paintings by William McTaggart and Samuel Peploe outside the National Galleries of Scotland, as well as work by the Glasgow Boys. The permanent displays tell the story of Kirkcaldy's industrial heritage, including its linoleum industry, and the cafe shows pieces of locally made Wemyss Ware pottery. The galleries are run by OnFife on behalf of Fife Council.
