Over het museum
Lacock Abbey was founded in 1232 by Ela, Countess of Salisbury, as a nunnery for Augustinian canonesses, and Ela later joined the community herself. After the Dissolution of the Monasteries, Henry VIII sold the abbey around 1539 to Sir William Sharington. He pulled down the church and turned the monastic buildings into a family house, keeping the medieval cloisters and adding an octagonal tower in the mid-sixteenth century.
The house passed through marriage to the Talbot family, and in the nineteenth century it became the home of William Henry Fox Talbot. In 1835 he made what is believed to be the oldest surviving photographic negative, showing a window of the abbey, and in the 1840s his calotype process made it possible to produce many prints from one negative. For this reason Lacock is known as a birthplace of photography. The family also added Gothic Revival features to the house in the early nineteenth century.
Matilda Talbot gave the abbey and the village of Lacock to the National Trust in 1944. Part of the ground floor now houses the Fox Talbot Museum, which presents the early history of photography and shows changing photography exhibitions. The cloisters and other rooms have appeared in films, including Harry Potter productions.
