Over het museum
Layer Marney Tower is a Tudor gatehouse in Essex built in the 1520s for Henry, 1st Lord Marney, who served Henry VIII as Lord Privy Seal. It was designed as a statement of wealth and standing, in red brick with window frames and decoration in terracotta in the Italian style, which was fashionable at court. Because there is no local building stone, the terracotta was used in place of carved stone.
The palace was never finished. Lord Marney died in 1523 and his son died two years later, and the estate was sold. The front facade with its tall gatehouse and the former stable block, now the Long Gallery, were completed and still stand. Lord Marney also refurbished the nearby church to house the tombs of his family, and a medieval barn was built into the courtyard.
Over about 500 years the house has been the home of 11 families. Running water, central heating and electricity were added around 1900, and visitor toilets and new areas were opened at the end of the 20th century. Visitors today can climb the tower, see displays in the gatehouse, walk through the gardens and parkland, and visit the church, tea room and small farm.
