Over het museum
Lincoln Castle was founded by William the Conqueror in 1068 on the site of a Roman fortress, on the hill above the city. It is unusual among English castles for having two mottes, and it has been a centre of royal power and of law for nearly a thousand years. Its walls, towers and gates survive, and visitors can walk around them.
The castle also became a place of justice and punishment. The county gaol was built in 1787 and extended in 1847 as a Victorian prison, and it remained in use until prisoners were moved to a new gaol in 1878. The Assize courts building of 1823 still houses Lincoln Crown Court. Part of the prison, including its chapel, is now a museum.
The castle is owned by Lincolnshire County Council and is a scheduled monument. The Lincoln Castle Revealed project, completed in April 2015, restored the site and added a vault for Lincoln's copy of the 1215 Magna Carta, one of only four surviving copies of that version, alongside the Charter of the Forest. Because of conservation needs, each document is off display for three months of the year, when a guest document is shown. The grounds of about six and a half acres are free to enter, and tickets cover the wall walk, the prison and the Magna Carta vault.

The castle is a historic monument with many steps and uneven surfaces. The accessible entrance is the East Gate, which has a paved route that avoids the cobbles; the West Gate is too steep. The Medieval Wall Walk has narrow, steep steps and is not suitable for wheelchair users. Lifts serve all three floors of the Victorian Prison, although some cells and walkways are not accessible, and the Magna Carta vault and its cinema are fully accessible. Two wheelchairs can be borrowed free of charge from the shop. Accessible toilets are on the ground floor of the prison and at the East Gate; there is a toilet hoist but no adult changing table. Induction loop headsets, transcripts of the films, an easy read guide, Take a Break bags with ear defenders and Hidden Disabilities Sunflower lanyards are available. Carers are admitted free. Only accredited assistance dogs are allowed.
