Over het museum
Ludlow Castle was founded after the Norman Conquest by Walter de Lacy, who had come to England in 1066 in the household of William fitzOsbern, the Earl of Hereford. It stands on a rocky promontory above the River Teme and was one of a chain of castles protecting the border with Wales. His sons Roger and then Hugh built the earliest parts that survive today, and the de Lacy family held the lordship until the end of the 13th century. It was one of the first castles in England to be built in stone.
From 1473 the castle became a royal residence and the seat of the Council of the Marches, which governed Wales and the border counties, so that Ludlow was for a time seen as the capital of Wales. Prince Edward, later Edward V, lived here, and Prince Arthur, the eldest son of Henry VII, died here in 1502. Judges' lodgings and other buildings were added during this period. The castle was a Royalist stronghold in the Civil War and surrendered to a Parliamentary force in 1646.
After the Council of the Marches was abolished in 1689 the castle was abandoned and fell into ruin, and local people took building materials from it. It was leased to the Earl of Powis in 1771 and bought by the family in 1811, when it began to attract visitors in the Picturesque era. It is still owned by the Powis Castle Estate and is open to visitors today.

The castle is an outdoor medieval ruin with cobbles, grass and bonded gravel, and parts of it cannot be reached by wheelchair or pushchair. The inner bailey is uneven, although a bonded gravel path crosses it, and most rooms and towers are reached by steps. Access is easier at the Judges' Lodgings. The ground floor of the shop and the cafe, including its terrace, are accessible to wheelchair users, but the first-floor Heraldic Roll exhibition is not; the shop exit has 3 steps, so visitors leave through the main gates. Accessible toilets are in the shop and the cafe. A 3D model of the castle by the ticket office has braille and Moon labels for visitors with visual impairments. Dogs on leads are welcome.
