Over het museum
The Mary Rose was built in 1510 and served Henry VIII's navy for 34 years before she sank in the Solent in 1545 during the Battle of the Solent against the French fleet. The wreck lay on the seabed for centuries. A search led by Alexander McKee and a team of volunteers located her, and maritime archaeology led by Margaret Rule excavated the 34-metre wreck and recovered her contents. The hull was raised on 11 October 1982, 437 years after she sank.
Afterwards the ship went through about thirty years of conservation to stabilise her timbers. For a long time she was shown in a ship hall, first sprayed with water and later with a wax that stops the wood shrinking as it dries. That ship hall closed in 2009. The sprays were turned off in 2013, the timbers were dried slowly, and the ship is now displayed in the present museum.
Today the museum, run by the Mary Rose Trust, lets visitors see the hull from several levels, with glass walls and an open view on the top level, surrounded by thousands of Tudor objects found on board. These include nit combs, backgammon sets, shoes and engraved bowls that show daily life on board among a crew of around 500 men and one dog. The Museum stands within Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, which is a working naval base, and tells the story of the ship, her crew and the archaeology that recovered them.
