Over het museum
The Museum of East Asian Art (MEAA) was founded in 1993 by Brian McElney OBE, whose own collection forms the basis of the museum. It is housed in a converted Georgian townhouse at 12 Bennett Street in Bath, opposite the Assembly Rooms and a few minutes from The Circus. The museum is an independent educational charity and is accredited by Arts Council England.
Since its creation the collection has grown through donations and through purchases made with help from the Art Fund. It now holds more than 2,000 objects from East and Southeast Asia, including Neolithic pottery, ceramics from Imperial Chinese kilns, jade, lacquerware, metalware and bamboo carvings. The objects on display span the period from 5,000 BC to the present, and many more are kept in store while the museum improves its online collection database.
The museum's aim is to share the stories and histories of communities from East and Southeast Asia through art. Alongside the permanent collection it runs temporary exhibitions, events and activities for all ages, from Japanese tea ceremonies to Lunar New Year celebrations and family trails. A Discovery Room for families and a programme of learning resources support visits, and the website is also available in several East Asian languages.
