Over het museum
Nottingham Contemporary grew out of an earlier organisation, the Centre for Contemporary Art Nottingham, and opened to the public on 14 November 2009. Its first programme combined early works by David Hockney with recent pieces by Frances Stark. Alex Farquharson was the founding director, and Sam Thorne took over the role in 2016.
The building was designed by the London architects Caruso St John and stands on Weekday Cross in the Lace Market district, on a site that is described as one of the oldest in the city. Part of it is cut into the sandstone cliff. Its green outer cladding is embossed with a lace pattern, a reference to the local textile industry, and large windows face the street. The design received a RIBA Award in 2010.
Inside, the centre has four galleries, an auditorium, an education space and a study centre. It does not keep a permanent collection and instead presents several major exhibitions of international contemporary art each year, supported by talks, screenings, workshops and activities for families. The centre is a registered charity. Its main funder is Arts Council England, and it works in partnership with Nottingham Trent University and the University of Nottingham.
