Over het museum
Red House was commissioned by William Morris in 1859, soon after his marriage to Jane, and designed by his friend, the architect Philip Webb. Built in red brick with steep gabled roofs and pointed windows, it was planned from the inside out, with every room given only the windows it needed. The result was a plain, practical house with a medieval flavour that is regarded as a starting point of the Arts and Crafts movement.
William and Jane moved in during June 1860 and furnished the rooms with furniture designed by Webb and with murals, embroideries and stained glass made by Morris and his friends, among them Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Edward Burne-Jones and Elizabeth Siddal. This shared work led directly to the founding of the decorating firm Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co. in 1861. The house was also meant to be a place where artists could live and work together, and plans were drawn up to extend it for the Burne-Jones family.
The plans were dropped after a family tragedy, and the Morris family left the house in 1865. Later owners altered the interior, but many original features, painted decoration and pieces of furniture survive. The garden was designed to wrap around the house, with an apple orchard, a rose arch and Arts and Crafts planting. Today the house and garden are cared for by the National Trust and visited on guided tours.
