Over het museum

Saltram stands on the edge of Plymouth overlooking the River Plym. The Parker family arrived in the 1740s and turned the older manor house into a Georgian country house for visiting and entertaining. John Parker and his wife Theresa extended and redecorated it in the 1760s and 1770s, working with the architect Robert Adam, who designed the Saloon, one of the best preserved of his interiors, finished in 1772. Its carpet was woven to his design, and furniture makers such as Thomas Chippendale supplied pieces.

The Parkers remained at Saltram for several more generations, and each of them left changes in the house, the library and the garden. The architect John Foulston, who also reshaped parts of Plymouth, remodelled the library in 1818. The family later developed the garden with exotic plants, partly through their link with the Westonbirt Arboretum, while keeping the earlier layers of the landscape.

Saltram came to the National Trust in 1957, accepted by the state in place of inheritance tax as part of the National Land Fund set up after the Second World War. Today the house, garden and large estate are a popular green space for the people of Plymouth. The Trust is now installing a lift, platform lifts and ramps to create a step-free route through more of the house from summer 2027.
