Over het museum

There has been a mill beside the River Cole at Sarehole since the 16th century, and the present building dates from the 18th century. The industrialist Matthew Boulton leased it between 1756 and 1761 and used it as a flatting mill, rolling sheet metal for buttons. Over the years the site was also used for grinding corn, sharpening tools and drawing wire, and a steam engine and the tall chimney that gives the mill its unusual outline were added in the 1850s.

The mill went out of use in the early 20th century and fell into disrepair, until a local campaign saved it from demolition and it was restored in the 1960s and 1970s. It is now run by Birmingham Museums Trust. Of its two waterwheels, one ground wheat until it was damaged by flooding, and repair work is under way.

The mill is best known for its link to J. R. R. Tolkien, who spent part of his boyhood in the hamlet across the road. He explored the mill grounds with his brother, and the countryside around it is thought to have shaped the Shire and Hobbiton in his books. Visitors can see the waterwheel gears, the flour bins, the miller's house, the granary and the bakehouse, and explore the mill pond and the Woodland Realm, a small play wood with carved timber sculptures.

The mill is not fully accessible. There is level access from the entrance to the ticket desk, shop, toilets, the ground floor of the mill, the mill pond and the gardens, but the courtyard is cobbled with some kerbs. The first floor is reached by a steep wooden staircase (or by an alternative path from the mill pond), and the second floor by stairs only, because a lift cannot be installed in the historic building. An accessible toilet is off the stable block and needs a RADAR key from staff. The free car park has a short slope down to the entrance and a compact limestone surface that can become muddy. Assistance dogs are welcome, printed copies of information panels and video transcripts are available, and chairs can be provided on request.
