Over het museum

The first Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art opened in August 1960 in Inverleith House in the Royal Botanic Garden. In 1984 the collection moved to the former John Watson's Institution on Belford Road, a neoclassical building designed by William Burn in 1825 as a school for fatherless children. Since 2012 this building has been known as Modern One, while the former Dean Orphan Hospital opposite became Modern Two.

The collection covers modern and contemporary art from about 1900 to the present. It includes European art from Cubism and Expressionism, work by Matisse and Picasso, the Scottish Colourists, and an internationally renowned collection of Surrealism with works by Dalí, Magritte, Max Ernst and Dorothea Tanning. The post-war holdings feature artists such as Francis Bacon, David Hockney, Andy Warhol and Joan Eardley, and the collection also contains Scottish art and the ARTIST ROOMS display.

The building stands in a sculpture park with works by Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore and Rachel Whiteread, and a striking landform in front of the gallery by the landscape architect Charles Jencks. Since 2023 the group has called the two Belford Road buildings together the Modern.
