Over het museum
Sezincote was built from 1805 for Charles Cockerell, who had worked for the East India Company, after the estate passed to him from his elder brother Colonel John Cockerell. Charles commissioned his brother Samuel Pepys Cockerell, an architect, to design a house in the Mughal style of Rajasthan, with an onion dome, minarets, peacock-tail windows and pavilions. The artist Thomas Daniell, who had spent ten years in India drawing buildings and landscapes, helped to shape the design. The house was substantially complete by 1807, when the Prince Regent visited; his admiration for it is said to have influenced the design of the Royal Pavilion in Brighton.
While the outside is Indian in inspiration, the interior is purely Greek Revival and no attempt was made to Indianise it. The landscape was laid out with the help of Humphry Repton, and a water garden of spring-fed pools, streams and an Indian bridge adorned with bulls runs down the valley. The garden was neglected during the Second World War and was restored from 1968 by Sir Cyril and Lady Kleinwort, advised by Graham Stuart Thomas, who added canals and Irish yews to the south garden, a curved conservatory and a small Indian-style pavilion.
The house remains privately owned and stands at the centre of a working family estate in the north Cotswolds. It is open to visitors on set days, and visits to the house are by guided tour. It is thought to be the only Mughal-style building to survive in western Europe, and it is also used for a small number of weddings each summer.

Much of the garden is on a slope with steep banks, gravel paths and uneven stone bridges, which are difficult for wheelchairs. The ground floor of the house is accessible to wheelchairs but not to powered mobility vehicles, and the upstairs part of the tour can only be reached by stairs; a guide offers books and photographs for those who cannot climb. The Orangery Tearoom is reached by steps or a grassy bank, and a table on the lawn is served for anyone who cannot enter. There are disabled parking spaces at the garden entrance and a drop-off area near the ticket office. Only assistance dogs are allowed.
Kinderen & gezin

Children are admitted at a reduced price, but the half-hour house tour is aimed at adults and children may find it dull. The garden has steep banks and unfenced pools, so children need close supervision.
