Over het museum

Southampton City Art Gallery owes its origin to the will of Robert Chipperfield, a local pharmacist, councillor and magistrate, who in 1911 left his collection of paintings, drawings and engravings to the town and asked for a gallery that would be free to the public. His will also set up a fund for buying art, which could only be spent after consulting the Director of the National Gallery. A second fund for buying paintings was added by the will of Frederick William Smith in 1925.

The gallery opened in 1939 in the new Civic Centre building designed by the architect E. Berry Webber, where it remains. Further bequests followed, including those of Arthur Jeffress in 1961, Dr David and Liza Brown in 2002 and the Schlee bequest of over 100 prints, drawings and paintings in 2013.

The collection now holds more than 4,000 works spanning eight centuries and traces European art from the Renaissance to the present day. Its core is British art of the 20th century and after, including the Camden Town Group, Surrealism, the St Ives artists and contemporary work, much of it by Turner Prize artists. The government awarded the collection Designated status in 1998 as being of pre-eminent national significance. Notable works include paintings by Turner, Monet, Arcimboldo and Sickert and Edward Burne-Jones's Perseus Series, which is on permanent display. The gallery also stages changing exhibitions of historic and contemporary art.
