Over het museum

St Fagans National Museum of History lies in the grounds of St Fagans Castle, a manor house from the late sixteenth century on the western edge of Cardiff. In 1948 the Earl of Plymouth gave the castle and its parkland to the people of Wales, and the open-air museum was created there. Since then historic buildings from all over Wales have been taken down, moved and rebuilt in the 100-acre park.

More than forty original buildings from different periods now stand on the site. They include houses, a farm, a school, a chapel and a workmen's institute, and many are furnished and interpreted to show everyday life at different times. Craftspeople work in traditional workshops, native farm animals graze in the fields, and daily farming demonstrations take place. Welsh is used in everyday conversation by many of the museum's craftspeople and interpreters.

The museum is also home to modern galleries created with the help of individuals and communities across Wales, which explore Welsh history through play, shared stories and handmade activities. The castle and its formal gardens form a separate part of the visit. St Fagans is funded with support from the Welsh Government, so admission is free, and it is part of Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales.

The site is a large open-air museum with uneven floors and surfaces, and some paths near the castle are steep. Two lifts serve the galleries on the upper floor. Hearing loops are at the welcome desk, the shop and the Weston Centre. Free audio-described tours and guided assistance are available. Blue Badge parking is free outside the main entrance building.
