Over het museum

The Swanage Railway is a heritage line in the Isle of Purbeck, Dorset. The original ten-mile branch from Wareham to Corfe Castle and Swanage opened in 1885 after about 40 years of campaigning by Swanage businessmen. It brought tourists and carried ball clay and Purbeck stone out of the area, but passenger numbers declined from the 1950s, and British Rail closed the line in 1972, soon after which almost seven miles of track were lifted.

In 1976 the Swanage Railway Society began restoring the station buildings at Swanage, and the first passenger trains of the newly formed Swanage Railway Company ran in 1979. Volunteers extended the line step by step: to Herston in 1984, to Harman’s Cross in 1989, and to Corfe Castle and Norden in 1995. A signalled connection to the national rail network came into use in 2007, and the first excursion trains from London ran to Corfe Castle and Swanage in 2009.

Today the railway runs steam and diesel trains over about five and a half miles from Norden through Corfe Castle to Swanage, with stations at Corfe Castle and Harman’s Cross and a halt at Herston. It is managed by the Swanage Railway Trust, a registered charity, with train services and shops run by the Swanage Railway Company. At Corfe Castle station a free railway museum in the old goods shed, an exhibition coach and a cinema coach tell the story of the line’s rebuilding.
