Over het museum
Tate Liverpool opened on 24 May 1988 in a converted warehouse at the Royal Albert Dock, designed by the architect James Stirling, as a northern home for the national collection of modern and contemporary art. It was opened by the Prince of Wales. A major refurbishment in 1998 added gallery space, and the gallery later hosted the Turner Prize ceremony in 2007 and 2022.
The gallery closed its Royal Albert Dock building in October 2023 for a large redevelopment. Plans by the architects 6a include a new double-height Art Hall on the ground floor, larger and more flexible galleries, better facilities for families, schools and community groups, more accessible entrances and lifts, and lower energy use. Tate says the transformed gallery will reopen at the Royal Albert Dock in 2027.
During the works Tate Liverpool is based in a temporary space at RIBA North on Mann Island, next to the Museum of Liverpool. There are no further Tate exhibitions planned there, but visitors can see small displays curated by RIBA, a family area, a display on the plans for the new building and a display on the history of Tate Liverpool. Entry is free.
