Over het museum

The Vyne is a country house in Hampshire that William Sandys, later the first Baron Sandys and Lord Chamberlain to Henry VIII, built in the early 1500s on the site of an older manor house. The Sandys family lived here for generations and received Elizabeth I at the house. The Tudor chapel, with its stained glass, and the long oak gallery date from this period.

In 1653 the Sandys sold the property to Chaloner Chute, a lawyer, and his family owned The Vyne for about three centuries. In the 17th century the house was given a classical appearance, including a portico designed by John Webb, which is considered the first of its kind on an English country house. In the 18th century John Chute, who moved in the circle of the writer Horace Walpole, added a neo-classical staircase hall and reshaped other interiors.

Charles Chute left the house to the National Trust in 1958. Visitors see state rooms and the servants' quarters, with the collection accumulated by the Sandys and Chute families. Around the house are a lakeside garden with a Lime Avenue and a 17th-century summerhouse, a walled garden, an orchard and ancient woodland. In 2026 a house-wide exhibition looks at the Georgian owner John Chute and his taste.

A movable ramp is used at the house entrance, and the first floor of the house is reached only by a staircase without a handrail. An accessible route with hard gravel paths runs through the gardens, but other paths are uneven and the woodland paths have tree roots and can be muddy. There is deep water by the main bridge. Accessible toilets are in both toilet blocks, and limited indoor and outdoor wheelchairs can be reserved for the day by phone. Limited Blue Badge parking is available, and the drop-off point is on the south drive in front of the house. The tea-room is about 1,200 metres from the car park.
