Over het museum
Tintagel Old Post Office was built in the late 14th century as a thatched farmhouse of three rooms with a through-passage, open to the roof and partly used to shelter livestock. In the 16th and 17th centuries the thatch gave way to local slate, a stone chimney stack and fireplace were added, and bedrooms were built at either end of the central hall, turning it into a hall house. Further extensions over the following centuries gave the building its uneven, mixed appearance.
In the Victorian period the house served several small trades alongside farming, including a greengrocer, dressmaker, draper and shoemaker. Between about 1870 and 1878 it also acted as the village letter-receiving office, which gave it the name it still carries.
By the late 19th century it was in poor repair and at risk of demolition. A local group bought it at auction, and money raised from selling artworks of the house paid for repairs by an Arts and Crafts architect. Because the building needed long-term care, the group asked the National Trust to take it on, and the Trust acquired it in 1903 for £200. It was the Trust's first built property in Cornwall. Today visitors see the hall, the post room with Victorian postal equipment, a collection of samplers and bedspreads, and a cottage garden.
