Over het museum
Treasurer's House in Martock is a small medieval house in Somerset. The oldest part is the solar block of about 1250, and the great hall was added in 1293. The name comes from the treasurer of Wells Cathedral, Hugh of Wells, who acquired the property in 1227. A detached kitchen was added in the 15th century.
The house belonged to the Bishop of Bath until 1849, when it passed to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners. It was later in private hands, and a small wing was built. In 1943 Harold St George Gray, a curator of the Somerset Archaeological and Natural History Society's museum, bought it to preserve it.
His wife left the house to the National Trust in 1970. After the Trust took it over, medieval wall paintings in several rooms were uncovered and restored, including a 13th-century crucifixion scene found in the solar block. The house is listed Grade I and is still a lived-in property with limited visitor facilities.
