Over het museum

Tyntesfield takes its name from Tyntes Place, the old home of the Tynte family, which later passed through several owners. In the 1840s the merchant William Gibbs bought the estate near Wraxall. He remodelled a plain Regency house into an ornate Gothic Revival home and had the interiors decorated and furnished by leading Victorian craftsmen, including the designers John Norton and John Gregory Crace.

The Gibbs family fortune came from the international trading firm Antony Gibbs & Sons, whose profits grew greatly from the Peruvian guano trade. Over three more generations the family added to the house and introduced the latest technology of the day. A chapel modelled on the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris is joined to the house by a bridge.

Today the house is cared for by the National Trust and holds a collection of more than 72,000 objects, among them a painting of the Madonna and Child by Giovanni Bellini and extensive Chinese ceramics. The surrounding 540 acres include woodland, parkland, an orchard, formal terraces, a historic Orangery and a working Kitchen Garden. The former home farm now holds one of the Trust’s largest shops, a café in the Victorian dairy and a covered play area.
