Over het museum
Whitmore Hall is the family home of the Cavenagh-Mainwaring family at Whitmore, near Newcastle-under-Lyme in North Staffordshire. The manor of Whitmore appears in the Domesday Book, and the estate passed to the Mainwaring family in 1519; their descendants have owned it ever since. Five men named Edward Mainwaring served as High Sheriff of Staffordshire between 1645 and 1767.
The original house was encased in red brick during the reign of Charles II and was finished around 1676, giving it a balustraded frontage of nine bays and two storeys. It is a Grade I listed building and a fine example of a small Carolean manor house. From about 1863 the hall was let to tenants, among them the pottery manufacturer Thomas Twyford, until the family returned to live there in the 1920s.
A particularly well preserved Elizabethan stable block stands beside the hall. It has a cobbled ground floor with nine carved oak stalls, and burn marks on the first-floor timbers were made as protection against bad luck. The hall sits within the wider Whitmore Estate, with parkland, lakes and a kitchen garden that the family plans to restore. Visitors see the house on guided tours on selected days between March and September, and the gardens and grounds are also part of the visit.
