Om museet
The Bastogne War Museum opened on 22 March 2014 on the Mardasson hill, next to the American memorial erected in 1950 in memory of the Battle of the Bulge. It replaced the former Bastogne Historical Center, closed in 2009, whose star-shaped structure it retains within a new building. The project was financed by the Walloon Region and European funds; the city of Bastogne owns the site, and the company Tempora designed and runs the museum.
The permanent route follows four fictional characters inspired by real events: a German lieutenant, a young schoolteacher, a teenager from Bastogne and an American corporal. Through sets, testimonies, films and multisensory shows, it presents the winter of 1944 from the civilian side as well as the soldiers’ side. A scientific committee validated the content. Interactive kiosks are aimed particularly at young people and school classes.
The ticket also gives access to the Generations45 experience, which traces the fate of an American and a German veteran from 1945 to the fall of the Berlin Wall, to the Bois Jacques battlefield, explored with an augmented reality app, and to the Bastogne War Rooms, housed in the former American headquarters. The museum also has a bistro, a shop selling books and souvenirs, and documentation kept by a heritage association.
