Om museet
Work on the Belfry of Ghent began in 1313, a symbol of the power the guilds had gained in the city government. The building stone, grey limestone from Tournai, arrived in the city by boat. Because of conflicts between England and France, the building site stood idle for several years; only in 1380 did the tower receive its first temporary wooden spire.
The Belfry was above all the alarm system of the medieval city. A corps of tower watchmen, bell ringers, city trumpeters and shawm players kept watch day and night and announced the regulations of the aldermen. As early as 1380 a first wooden clock regulated life in the city; the present tower clock dates from 1913 and is still wound by hand every day. From 1408 onwards the city government kept the charters containing the city's rights and freedoms in the secreet, until these moved to the town hall in 1578. During the Second World War the Germans used this space as a command post and air-raid shelter.
In 1552 Ghent received its first carillon in the Belfry, then with eighteen bells. Today the instrument has 54 bells and weighs more than 30 tonnes. The tower is 95 metres high and is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today Historische Huizen Gent manages the Belfry as a visitor attraction: from the secreet you climb past many objects and stories to the gallery at the top, with views in all four directions.
