Om museet
Mietje Stroel, a stone statue of a peeing girl, is the best-known resident of Zelzate. She came into being in 1974 as a playful initiative of the carnival society De Gilde der Polkaheertjes, based on a local legend about a foundling who could not be toilet-trained. The artist Arlette Hutsebaut made the statuette, which first stood in front of the town hall.
Because air pollution threatened to damage the statuette, a bronze cast was made in 1987, which now stands in front of the town hall. The original statuette has been on display in the Mietje Stroel Museum since 1998. The Beschermcomité Garde Mietje Stroel (protection committee) looks after the girl, who according to the story is engaged to Manneken Pis from Brussels.
Over the years, associations and organisations have given Mietje little costumes, cloaks, capes and hats, so she has an extensive wardrobe. Together with numerous souvenirs and memorabilia, this can be seen in the museum in ’t Klooster.
