The Compagnie royale des anciens arbalétriers visétois is a traditional guild of Visé, which celebrated its 675th anniversary in 1985 and whose seat, the “Bouchon”, is on rue Haute. An earlier company museum already existed and was refreshed in the 1980s under its colonel-curator. Its present form dates from the early 2000s: in 2002 an exhibition of crossbows lent by the arms museum of the City of Liège gave the idea of setting up a small “sentimental” museum on the balcony of the function hall. Preparatory meetings took place at the end of 2003 and the museum was opened on 22 January 2005.

The collection includes war crossbows with moufle spanning mechanisms from the 15th and 16th centuries, cranequin crossbows decorated with carved ivory, jalet crossbows from the 17th to the 19th centuries and stock (crosse) crossbows from the 20th century, including two famous pieces, the “Duc d'Albe” and the “Marguerite”. In addition there are banners, including the 19th-century cornette, old flags, lances, trays, documents, photographs and the archives of the guild. Four crossbows from the 15th and 16th centuries have been restored with the support of the Fondation Roi Baudouin.

The museum is run by a museum council, which organises visits, publishes the annual journal “Le Balestrin” and acquires new pieces. It opens its doors free of charge on the first Sunday of the month and, for the rest of the year, by appointment.
