Om museet
Around 1900 Genk was a quiet village of about 3,000 inhabitants. In 1901 André Dumont discovered coal in Genk, and three mining sites were established there: Zwartberg, Waterschei and Winterslag. The Winterslag site was enormous; alongside the company buildings it had a fully developed underground concession that extended for kilometres. In 1914 the first lump of coal from the Campine basin was brought up there; actual extraction began in 1917. After a little over seventy years the mine closed for good on 31 March 1988.
The Winterslag mine building has been protected by ministerial decree since 1993. The coal washery, the brickworks, the workshops and the cooling towers were not preserved, but you can still see the lamp and shower rooms, the office building, the machine house with power station and winding engines (the Energy Building), the warehouses, the stables and the two pithead frames. In 2000 the idea of establishing a creative hub in the buildings took shape; in 2001 the city of Genk bought the site from the Limburg Reconversion Company, and in 2005 the name C-mine was born.
C-mine expeditie starts in the Energy Building, where six metres underground you discover surprising installations, with story capsules featuring animations, holograms and virtual reality, an interactive sound cabin and a labyrinth. Afterwards you walk through old tunnels and past installations. The pithead frames are being renovated; the viewing point is temporarily closed, but you can experience it with 360° viewers (VR).
