Om museet
Chimay Castle stands on a rocky spur overlooking the Eau Blanche, where a Roman road crossed the river. A first castle was built there towards the end of the 9th century. Excavations carried out in 2004 revealed a church about 8 by 20 metres, probably built around 887, followed in the 10th century by an imposing collegiate church with a crypt and a keep. The Allard family, established at Chimay at that time, created a chapter of canons there dedicated to Saint Monegund.
Over the centuries, wars and fires led to several rebuildings and revivals of the castle, which has stood for more than a thousand years. It remains the private home of the princes of Chimay, who open its doors to visitors. The theatre, inaugurated in 1863, has been listed as Exceptional Heritage of Wallonia since 1993.
The visit begins with the film “Secrets de Chimay”, in which Stéphane Bern presents the castle's history. It then leads, on a guided tour or self-guided with a mobile app, through the entrance hall, the armoury, the Thierry Bosquet salon, the portrait salon and the winter garden, before the theatre and the chapel, which offers a view over the park.
