Om museet

The Elf Novembermuseum is housed in the civic almshouse of Nazareth, a building from 1878 with a neo-Gothic façade. For about a century it was home to the elderly, until they moved to a new building in 1998. It then became an exhibition space of Heemkring Scheldeveld and, in June 2001, a war museum. The items came mainly from donations, militaria fairs and private collections.

The collection covers the First World War, with the battle at the Edemolen and the role of Captain Camiel Fremault, and the Second World War, with the events of May 1940 in Vinkt and Meigem, including documents on summary executions and civilian victims. A panorama of the Normandy landings, a military motorcycle and weapons from the war years are also part of the collection.

Since the renovation the almshouse has been a Heritage House of the municipality of Nazareth-De Pinte, with an archive room and exhibition spaces. The exhibition on life during the First World War in Nazareth and Eke shows unique images from private collections, original documents and testimonies: the fight at the Edemolen, the liberation offensive just before the Armistice, the requisitioning of workers and food, and the poverty and hunger of the population.
