Om museet
The museum is housed in the Simonshuis, a teutenhuis from 1883 built by Willem Simons and surrounded by a park. Later it came into the hands of the Eindhoven industrialist Frans Schellens, who had a velvet weaving mill behind the house. During the Second World War the house served as the headquarters of General Miles Dempsey, and Eisenhower and Montgomery also visited it there.
In 1974 the municipality bought the house. It became the seat of the tourist office, and in the 1980s the museum also moved into the building; in 1997 an annex was added. The museum is run by the vzw Grevenbroekmuseum, the local history society of Achel.
The collection shows the history of the region through original objects, replicas and models. There are finds from prehistory, such as flint arrowheads and objects from burial mounds, and from the Bronze Age, the Iron Age and the Roman period. A Frankish warrior's grave with skeleton and grave goods stands out, as do models of historic buildings, including the castle of Hamont around 1750. There are also rooms on the teuten, on the two world wars and on the 1950s and 1960s.
