Om museet
The building in Oevel, a district of Westerlo, was built in 1757 as the parish presbytery and leans against an older presbytery from 1614. It is a sober Classicist double house with a tent roof, built in Oevel brick, and a listed monument. In 1803 it became municipal property, in 1869 it was extended, and in 1912 a storey was added. After the town hall burned down in 1959, the building served as the town hall of Oevel until the merger in 1977.
The collection of the museum association Heemkring Ansfried began in 1970. In 1979 the Historisch Streekmuseum van de Zuiderkempen (Historical Regional Museum of the Southern Kempen) opened in the building. Volunteers from the local history circle keep the museum open and run the café and terrace.
The permanent display shows how the Kempenaar lived a hundred years ago: you visit the old schoolroom, the village shop and the little café, and get to know the blacksmith, the brewer, the plumber and the clog maker. There are also historic interiors, farm tools and craft objects, photos and objects from local associations, and the banner of honour that Westerlo received for its role in Belgian independence in 1830.
