Om museet
The Kuipersmuseum opened on 12 February 2010 as a tribute to Achiel Bonami, a cooper through and through. Achiel learned the trade in the 1950s in the cooperage of the Meiresonne brewery in Ghent, where new barrels were made and old ones repaired.
In 1958 he started his own cooperage on the Lege Kouter in Nevele, where the museum is now located. There he made decorative cooperage, such as the barton, a small barrel on wheels with little doors and a rack for bottles, which was mainly exported to Germany. When demand for decorative cooperage fell in the 1980s, he converted barrels from the closed brewery into small port barrels, among others for Filliers, and began making wooden flower tubs for gardens.
Since 1984 his daughter Marleen has worked in the business. After Achiel’s death on 11 April 1987 she carried on the cooperage and retrained in woodworking. She still makes wooden plant tubs in the workshop. In the museum you can see cooperage materials from the past, and a visitor can attend a demonstration of the craft.
