Om museet
Het Steen includes part of the oldest city wall of Antwerp; the first stones date from the 11th century. It is the last visible witness of the walled castle that long defined the city's image. Over the centuries the building took on many functions and changed shape several times.
In 2016 the jury of the Open Call of the Vlaams Bouwmeester (Flemish Government Architect) chose the design by noAarchitecten for the restoration and new use. The architects started from the detached building as it was in 1890. The extension from the 1950s was replaced by a new building with a public tower and a roof terrace overlooking the Scheldt; the façades were created in collaboration with the artist Pieter Vermeersch. The works began in May 2018 and were completed in autumn 2021.
Since reopening in autumn 2021, Het Steen has been Antwerp's tourist welcome centre. The building houses a Visitor Center, a cruise terminal, a freely accessible panoramic roof terrace and The Antwerp Story, an interactive experience route in eleven themed rooms that presents the city's history, culture and future.
