Om museet
The In Flanders Fields Museum tells the story of the First World War in Belgium, the Westhoek and around Ypres. Its motto is “sharing history”: a land where war has raged does not easily let go of it. In Belgium more than 600,000 people died, more than 550,000 of them in the Westhoek. The museum sees telling this story as a universal and contemporary message of peace.
It is housed in the rebuilt Cloth Hall on the Grote Markt, a symbol of wartime suffering and rebirth. On arrival, each visitor receives a wristband with which they choose which witness of the war to meet; interactive presentations appear in your own language. The permanent exhibition shows hundreds of objects and images, lets characters tell their own stories, and pays attention to the dead, the landscape, war art and the culture of remembrance.
After climbing 231 extra steps, you can look out from the restored Belfry over the city and the surrounding battlefields. The museum is part of Musea Ieper, the museums of the City of Ypres, and also has a research centre and a collection that it manages itself.
