Om museet
The museum is housed in the former Stellingwerff/Theunissen distillery on the Witte Nonnenstraat. The complex was originally a convent farm of the Franciscan penitent sisters, the White Nuns. After the sale of monastic property during the French period it became a jenever distillery, later owned by the Stellingwerff and Theunissen families. When the widow Theunissen died in 1971, the crumbling complex threatened to disappear. In 1975 it was protected as the first industrial-archaeological monument in Flanders.
In 1979 the City of Hasselt bought the site to house a museum illustrating the town's ties with the jenever industry. The Jenevermuseum itself had existed since 1982 and until then was housed in the Oud Gasthuis, now the Modemuseum. After a restoration from 1983 to 1987, the National Jenevermuseum opened on the new site in September 1987. The living and working spaces of the distiller families have been preserved along the route, from the ox stable and bottling room to the still room, the malt loft and the barn.
Since 1991 the museum has distilled jenevers and liqueurs according to old recipes in its authentic still from the late 19th century. A master distiller is regularly at work there. Alongside the permanent display there are temporary exhibitions, workshops and guided tours. The museum is a recognised museum with a quality label from the Flemish Community and a museum of the City of Hasselt.

| Godt at vide | Groups can book guided tours, tastings and workshops, at least two weeks in advance. For schools there is a workshop on the science behind jenever and one on alcohol use. In autumn the master distiller regularly demonstrates the still in operation (subject to change; see the activity calendar). The museum is a member of Vinum Et Spiritus and endorses its vision of responsible alcohol consumption. |
