Om museet

Le Bois du Cazier is a former coal mine in Marcinelle, now part of Charleroi. The concession dates back to 1822; in 1899 the mine was taken over by the company that operated it until the disaster of 8 August 1956. That morning a fire, triggered by an incorrect manoeuvre when loading the cage at a depth of 975 metres, filled the galleries with smoke: 262 miners of twelve nationalities lost their lives. The mine closed for good on 9 December 1967.

The site has been turned into a place of remembrance and industrial heritage. The 8 August 1956 Space is an interpretation centre devoted to the tragedy, to workplace safety and to migration, with films, photographs and testimonies; the memorial and the wall of remembrance honour the victims. In the former hanging room, the Industry Museum traces the history of the industrial sectors of the Haine-Sambre-et-Meuse industrial belt, and the Glass Museum occupies the former lamp room. The old workshops host demonstrations of forging, foundry work and glassblowing.

A 25-hectare wooded estate with three slag heaps laid out as walking trails surrounds the site. Since 2012 Le Bois du Cazier has been on UNESCO's World Heritage List, together with the three other major mining sites in Wallonia (Grand-Hornu, Bois-du-Luc, Blegny-Mine), and since 2017 it has carried the European Heritage Label.
