Om museet
The museum occupies the house in Jette where René Magritte and his wife Georgette lived from 1930 to 1954, longer than anywhere else in his adult life. He painted about half of his oeuvre there, set up a studio and a small advertising agency, Studio Dongo, and the house was also a meeting place for Belgian Surrealists. The building dates from 1925.
In 1992 the art enthusiast André Garitte rediscovered the house, and the idea of turning it into a museum was born the following year. After more than six years of work, the apartment was returned to its original state and the floors were fitted out for a biographical exhibition. The René Magritte Museum opened its doors on 5 June 1999.
The collection offers an intimate portrait of the artist, with archives, objects, around twenty original works (gouaches, drawings and two oil paintings) and about ten advertising works, as well as works by other Surrealists such as ELT Mesens, Marcel Mariën, Paul Delvaux, Jane Graverol, Félix Labisse and Rachel Baes. The visit ends in Magritte's apartment, restored with its original furniture.
In 2019 a Museum of Abstract Art opened in the same complex. It presents more than 200 works, mainly by Belgian artists, and brings Surrealism and abstraction into dialogue: the second floor links the two museums.
