Om museet
MigratieMuseumMigration, often called MMM, opened its doors in Molenbeek on 12 October 2019, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Foyer association. It tells the story of immigrant workers, from the first arrivals at the Petit Château to expatriates, refugees, Europeans who move freely within the EU and the many other migrants who have shaped the city. Today around 180 nationalities live together in Brussels.
The museum relies on the power of personal stories. It has conducted interviews with many Brussels residents, whose memories, photos and everyday objects are presented in some 50 display cases spread across two large circular structures. A timeline traces the migration waves since the Second World War, from bilateral labour agreements to family reunification and the reception of asylum seekers at the Petit Château. Touchscreens show how the population of Brussels has changed.
Works by contemporary artists punctuate the route, from the entrance up to the second floor, including an installation by Elia Li Gioi made from objects washed up on Mediterranean beaches. The museum aims to be empathetic, participatory and welcoming: everyone is invited to share their own story. Next to the building, a free garden displays exotic plants and works of art. Every October the museum also presents part of its exhibition in Saint-Josse-ten-Noode.
