Om museet
The museum occupies a former bank headquarters in central Brussels, designed in 1872 by architect Désiré De Keyser for the Union du Crédit de Bruxelles, a cooperative bank founded by entrepreneurs after the banking crisis of 1848. In 1969 the building passed to a Californian bank, and then to the National Bank of Belgium in the 1980s. The banking halls under glass roofs, the entrance corridor and the staircase have been listed since 1984; a meticulous restoration was completed in 2009, and the museum opened in the building in 2010.
The collections, assembled from 1950 onwards with a view to a museum, cover the economic and financial history of Belgium: more than 25,000 banknotes, coins spanning more than 2,500 years, emergency money, commodity money, medals, iconographic documents, rare books, and machines and objects connected with money.
The visit is made with a free audioguide and follows three routes: the evolution of means of payment, the role and missions of the National Bank, and then a “dépôt” (depot) devoted to the relationship between humanity and money. The cellars, with two restored strongrooms, are accessible only during events.
