Om museet
The museum was founded on the initiative of residents of the Vieux-Spa district, following a neighbourhood exhibition on local trades, notably that of the washerwomen. It opened its doors at the end of June 1993 in the Waux-Hall, a building dating from 1770, before moving in October 2012 to the Sept Heures park on rue Hanster. It welcomed groups from February 2013 and individual visitors from March 2013.
The chronological trail, spread across twenty-five small rooms, traces the evolution of laundering from antiquity: the great medieval wash, the history of soap and washing powders, ironing, the first washing machines of the mid-19th century, and the living and working conditions of the washerwomen. The social aspect (hygiene, the scarcity of consumer goods) is covered alongside the techniques.
The museum is run by about twenty volunteers, who collect the objects and documents, restore the machines and guide the visits. They often operate restored appliances in front of visitors.
