Om museet

The Musée des arts de la Marionnette is the heritage hub of the Centre de la Marionnette of the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles, based in Tournai in the Hôtel Peeters. This neoclassical town house was built at the beginning of the 19th century on a site that was once a place of worship, watch and combat: the Saint-Georges tower, at the back of the park, is a remnant of the first town wall (11th–13th centuries), and a convent of nuns existed here in the 17th century until 1796. The City of Tournai acquired the site in 1980 and offered the Créa-Théâtre company the chance to move in and create the Centre de la Marionnette there; the company inaugurated the building in 1986.

The museum presents a selection from a collection of more than 3,000 objects related to the art of puppetry from around the world: puppets, making tools, photographs, sets and accessories. The permanent exhibition “Marionnettes entre Terre et Ciel” shows pieces from Northern Europe, Africa and across Asia. It is set within the local history of Tournai’s rod-puppet theatres, the “Poriginelles”, large rod puppets in the Picard dialect, a series of which joined the museum in early 2020; two exceptional figures of Japanese Bunraku have been housed there since 2017.

The Maison de la Marionnette also brings together a centre for creation and transmission, with residencies and training, and the Créa-Théâtre company. Part of the collection has been digitised under the PEP plan of the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles and can be consulted on the PANORAMA platform.
