Om museet
The Musée des Celtes opened in June 1998 in Libramont, in the former presbytery on the Place Communale. It was born from the wish to show the public the results of more than thirty years of excavations at Celtic sites in the Ardennes, in particular burial mounds. Until then the objects found were scattered among private and public collections, often piled in crates and poorly preserved. At the time Belgium had no museum dedicated specifically to the Celts.
The commune of Libramont-Chevigny renovated the building from its own funds, with help from the French Community for the museum layout. The museum is attached to the Centre de recherches archéologiques en Ardenne, an association founded in 1985 to make the regional archaeological heritage known; at the end of 2021 the association moved its headquarters to the first floor of the Halle aux Foires, at number 7 Place Communale.
The route is more concerned with daily life, trades and beliefs than with death: tableware, weapons, jewellery and tools from regional excavations rub shoulders with activities to try, such as grinding flour, dressing in Celtic style, making a brooch, using a tinderbox or weaving. A booklet accompanies children aged 3 to 10. The museum announces a closure from mid-December to mid-January for works.
