Om museet
The Musée des instruments de musique was founded in 1877 around the collection of Victor-Charles Mahillon, its first curator. It was then part of the Royal Conservatory of Brussels and was meant to introduce instruments to students, so its educational purpose goes back to its origins. The first collections came in particular from the musicologist François-Joseph Fétis and from a set of Indian instruments given to King Leopold II.
Under Mahillon’s direction, the museum acquired other major collections, such as that of Contarini-Corer and part of the collection of César Snoeck, and it opened up to the international scene. After the First World War, lacking resources, it focused mainly on conservation. The revival began in 1957 with a new curator, and again in the 1990s.
Since 2000, the museum has occupied the former Old England store, an Art Nouveau building by the architect Paul Saintenoy, built in 1899 and bought by the Belgian state in 1978, along with a neoclassical section. It is now part of the Royal Museums of Art and History and houses nearly 10,000 instruments. The route has some thirty thematic sections across four levels, and the museum also has a concert hall with 200 seats.
